mLED Ltd, the global leader in high brightness micro-pixellated LED arrays, was given the accolade of Rising Star 2011; a competition that sets out to identify companies with significant growth potential.

More than 200 people attended Strathclyde’s Enterprise Awards Dinner with the glittering ceremony taking place in Glasgow’s Grand Central Hotel. As winners of the award mLED are to receive a bespoke PR and social media prize package provided by The BIG Partnership Ltd.

ACTMOST Success for mLED

mLED has been chosen to participate in ACTMOST: Europe’s catalyst for optics innovation. ACTMOST will provide mLED with timely, cost-effective, and investment-free access to cutting-edge micro-photonic technologies and knowledge to professionally support the development of new products. The technology support to be provided can encompass the entire food-chain of micro-photonics: from optical design, to measurement, prototyping, packaging, all the way to proof-of-concept demonstration, reliability testing, and pre-production level fabrication.

mLED is delighted to receive this valued support. This once again goes to highlight the level of innovation being developed at mLED. Dr Jim Bonar commented, “ This is a fantastic result for mLED and demonstrates our commitment to working in a collaborative manner with world leading institutions. To have access to research powerhouses such as VTT, IMEC and VUB is tremendous and fits perfectly with our strategic ambitions.

First INSPIRE Industrial Secondment Awarded to mLED

The first INSPIRE industrial secondment was recently awarded to mLED, a company specialising in solid-state optical micro-projection systems. During the secondment, a researcher from the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde will spend time at mLED developing novel systems for the rapidly growing Optogenetics research market.

Technology Strategy Board Competition Success for mLED

mLED to collaborate with the winners of a SU2P Pilot Award; IoP and Stanford University

The Institute of Photonics Strathclyde and Stanford University have successfully won an SU2P Pilot Award. mLED is supporting the project, seeing clear commercial potential for the results. The winning of this award reflects the skills and capabilities of the three bodies and will enable collaborative development of microLED prototype systems for applications relating to areas such as retinal degenerative disorders.

The SU2P pilot programme is geared to proof of principle exercises that have a clear potential for commercial exploitation.

TTOM Award to mLED & Edinburgh University

mLED is pleased to announce membership to the SU2P industry partnership programme. This is a collaboration of 6 universities that delivers a disruptive new approach to business engagement, with facilitated, flexible interactions between UK industry and university researchers in Scotland and the USA. The collaboration works hand-in-hand with industry partners to understand their needs and then identify relevant investigators motivated to provide expert advice and/or deliver flexible project solutions to company requirements.

The Universities of Strathclyde, St Andrews, Heriot-Watt and Glasgow, together with Stanford University and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), are collaborating in a project which has won funding worth £1.6 million over three years from the Science Bridges awards, announced by Research Councils UK (RCUK).

Nick Kuenssberg to chair Scottish photonics firm

mLED Limited, the newly-established spin-out company from the University of Strathclyde, has announced the appointment of Professor Nick Kuenssberg OBE, veteran international businessman, as chairman and investor director.

Nick Kuenssberg’s appointment has been secured by the company’s founder and chief executive, Dr Jim Bonar, within weeks of the conclusion of a successful investment programme managed by Braveheart Investment Group.

Nick Kuenssberg has wide experience of working in Europe and South America and a substantial track record with start-up and high tech businesses including chairmanships of Iomart Group plc and of ScotlandIS. He is currently chairman of three other private companies and has worked extensively in senior corporate roles with companies such as Coats Viyella, Dynacast International, Scottish Power and Standard Life.

The technology which mLED is commercialising, as a development platform for micro light sources, is applicable to a range of industries, including life sciences, communications and printing. Kuenssberg said: “The attraction of this platform is demonstrated by international demand for demonstrator kits for a variety of applications from US, China, Korea, Israel and Germany, leading to sales well ahead of plan.”

Dr Bonar said: “We have great pleasure in welcoming Nick Kuenssberg to the company. His wealth of business experience and knowledge will be an asset and we are pleased that he is joining us so early in our history.”

Dr Bonar has also initiated a Technical Advisory Council for mLED, which is being established to ensure the positioning of the company as a mainstream player in the fast-growing world of micro light emitting diodes.

The founder member is Professor Martin Dawson FRSE, a world leading player in this area and Director of the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde. Dr Bonar commented: “Martin’s expertise will be of immense value as a start while further appointments are planned before the end of the year.”

Professor Dawson said: “The technology which is now being commercialised by mLED was developed at the University of Strathclyde, which was extensively involved in setting up the company and is a shareholder. mLED has already made great progress and I look forward to enhancing its initial success.”

Spin-out in cutting edge light source technology
